Ethan and Eve / Alban et Ève

What if the real original sin was not taking a bite of the apple, but trying to escape the boredom of perfect happiness?
Lyrics and music: Jean-Pierre Martinez
Voice: Suno

Ethan and Eve offers a humorous and iconoclastic reinterpretation of the biblical story of Genesis. Far from portraying the Garden of Eden as a lost paradise, the song imagines a world so perfect that it ultimately becomes unbearable.

The lyrics reverse the traditional interpretation of the myth. In this version, Adam and Eve are not expelled from a wonderful world because of disobedience; instead, they seek to escape an existence frozen in time, where nothing ever changes. The absence of lack, risk, desire or surprise gradually turns eternal happiness into unbearable boredom.

Through this inversion, the song questions the very nature of happiness. Can we truly be happy without desire? Without challenges? Without the possibility of losing what we have? The lyrics suggest that difficulties, uncertainty and even suffering give depth to existence and are precisely what make life worth living.

The biblical story also becomes a metaphor for life as a couple. After the excitement of the early days, routine can gradually turn a relationship into endless repetition. The apple then becomes the symbol of the need to reinvent one’s life, take risks and step off the beaten path.

The rockabilly spirit perfectly accompanies this rebellion against the established order. The song celebrates movement, imperfection and adventure over absolute security. Here, rock becomes a philosophy of life: better the uncertainty of freedom than the comfort of an eternity without surprises.

Behind its humour and playful biblical references, Ethan and Eve ultimately defends a deeply humanist idea: what gives meaning to life is not perfection, but the freedom to choose one’s own path, make mistakes and begin again.

The complete lyrics of Ethan and Eve are presented here together with the audio recording.

Lyrics of the song

Aucun besoin, aucune envie

C’est long l’éternité
Quand on n’a rien à faire

Aucun besoin, aucune envie

On a parfois l’impression

C’est ça l’attitude rock and roll
They tell us the Garden of Eden
Was paradise on Earth.
I don't know about you, but to me
It sounds much more like hell.

Just imagine Eve and Adam,
Naked in an organic vegetable garden,
Each with their name on a toothbrush cup,
Using a little stream as a mirror.

Neither hot nor cold, the weather's always fine,
No hunger, no thirst, not even a scratch.
No desire, no libido,
And no commute, work, sleep routine.

It may sound pleasant at first,
But after a while, don't you think
You'd be bored out of your mind
In that kind of paradise?

Eve and Adam, Adam and Eve,
At first it may have seemed like a dream.
But waking up every morning
To the very same face...
After a while, that can get a little tiring.

No needs, no desires,
No witnesses, no jealousy.
No questions, no illness.
Is that really what life is?

Needing nothing, not wanting you,
No way to change the scenery.
Nothing to do but fold your arms.
Your paradise, for heaven's sake, is hell.

Every day is Sunday
When there are no weekdays.
No deaths, no births,
No Monday in the sun.

Eternity is a long time
When there's nothing to do,
When you know tomorrow
Will be exactly like yesterday.

I understand why a boy and a girl
Wanted to bite into the apple.
Paradise isn't really living;
It's not even a sitcom.

Life on Earth isn't paradise either.
It's not Vivaldi's Four Seasons.
You earn your bread through hardship,
And bring children into the world by the sweat of your brow.

True, it's not much fun.
But if we're unhappy sometimes,
We know it won't last forever,
And at least we know why.

Sometimes it feels
As if we were Adam and Eve,
As if our lives were an Eden
That looks more like a prison.
That's when it's time to bite the apple
And throw away the core.
All roads may lead to Rome,
But we'll choose our own road.

You can keep your Eden.
I'd rather bite the apple.
I'll turn the serpent into cowboy boots.
Now that's the rock-and-roll attitude.
